If there’s one thing we’ve learnt as a team full of skincare nerds, it’s that hydrated skin will always be IN – irrespective of your skin type. And rightly so! When your skin cells are hydrated, your skin is plumper, stronger and more radiant. In its own way, hydrated skin keeps acne at bay and your barrier in top shape.
So, how do you get to Destination: Hydration Station? All aboard the Humectant train!
What is a humectant?
Simply put, a humectant is a moisturizing agent with an ability to retain moisture in the skin. It also helps seal cracks in the skin.
How do humectants work?
Humectants draw moisture to the skin’s surface and traps water, preventing your skin from drying out too quickly. Most often, humectants draw this moisture from the atmosphere and into the skin. This is what makes it a great ingredient for those living in areas of high humidity. It’s also the one product to include in your monsoon skincare routine to make the high moisture in the air do the work for you!
What are some common humectants?
You’re probably already aware of some common humectants, such as Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin! Some other humectants worth noting are, Pentavitin, Urea, Propylene Glycol and even AHAs like Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid!
Why do I need humectants in my skincare routine?
Strengthens skin barrier
Stratum Corneum aka the outermost layer of the skin also acts as the skin’s barrier. It’s primary function is to protect the skin from microbes and slow down water loss from the skin. Humectants increase hydration by trapping moisture in the topmost layer of the skin, keeping your barrier strong, healthy and in top shape to do its job perfectly.
Mildly exfoliates
Humectants help slough of dead skin cells to even out moisture levels in the skin, thereby acting as mild exfoliants, and giving you smoother, more radiant skin!
Soothes irritated skin
Humectants are also known to soothe and calm irritated skin, and makes for a great addition in a barrier-repair routine.
Slows down early signs of aging
Humectants, by virtue of keeping your skin hydrated and your barrier strong, help reduce appearance of fine lines and other signs of aging. It also keeps your skin plump!
