How to choose the right serum
Share
Ask anyone what’s the one product they cannot do without in their skincare routine, and the resounding answer from majority will be a serum of some kind. If you’re new to this, it’s entirely too easy to feel overwhelmed, what with there being so many choices out there! But with this handy guide, you’ll know exactly what to do in no time!
The role of a serum
The most important step in choosing the right serum for yourself is first understanding the role of a serum. A serum, typically, contains actives and is more concentrated than a moisturiser. This makes it that much more effective and efficient towards tackling specific skin concerns.
You’ll find oil-based as well as water-based serums, and you can choose the consistency you prefer based on your skin type and preference. However, consistency aside, the key here is to understand precisely what concern you want addressed and then considering the perfect pick for you.
How to choose a serum
Broadly, here are some common skin concerns you probably want addressed:
Hydration (or lack thereof):
Hydration is one of the building blocks of healthy, strong skin. To that end, serums with Hyaluronic Acid, Pro-Vitamin B5, pentavitin, saccharide isomerate, aloe vera, glycerin are excellent candidates. The good news for you is, most multi-benefit serums come loaded with hydrating ingredients. So you can always opt for one, but keep an eye out for the above ingredients to ensure your skin is quenched plenty.
Acne & Oil Control:
Whether you have acne-prone skin, or need something treatment-focused, look for something with either Salicylic Acid to exfoliate the acne away, control oil production and prevent clogging of pores. Niacinamide is another good bet, thanks to its versatile properties – right from reducing existing breakouts and redness to tackling dark spots and pigmentation.
Dullness & Pigmentation:
You need a brightening or an exfoliating serum. An exfoliating serum will slough off dead and pigmented skin cells, to reveal newer, radiant looking skin. Meanwhile, brightening serums inhibit melanin production or prevent melanin transfer to tackle dark spots and pigmentation, and even out skin tone. Look for serums with Vitamin C (stable forms like Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate and Ethyl Ascorbic Acid are great for beginners), Tranexamic Acid, Kojic Acid or Alpha Arbutin. However, make sure you use these sparingly, as acids can dry out your skin if you overdo it!
Early Signs of Aging:
Remember, folks! The goal is to age gracefully with our skin at its healthiest and most well-cared for, not to shun the inevitability of aging entirely! With that in mind, some of your best bets for taking on age spots, sagging skin, fine lines and the usual suspects are: peptides to plump up your skin, Vitamin C to help boost collagen production, ceramides to bolster your skin barrier and most of all, retinol (make sure you consult with a dermatologist for the best way to use a retinol).
Overall Skin Maintenance:
If none of the above are a point of concern for you, and all your skin needs is some general maintenance and wholesome care, go for serums with antioxidants, probiotics and multi-benefit ingredients like Niacinamide.
